Why Its Not The End of the World to Get Married Young

I have seen several things posted to Facebook lately about things like "26, Unmarried, and Childless" or "14 Reasons You Shouldn't Marry Young" telling people, and women in the 20's that they shouldn't get married until they have their life settled, saying things like "You'll miss having male friends" or "marriage sort of freezes your development." But the problem I have seen with all of this is that no matter what you do, someone is going to tell you what you're doing is wrong.

My boyfriend and I have been together for over three and a half years and we are only 22/23, and I plan on being married in the next year and a half (DISCLAIMER: No, I'm not engaged yet, but we are still planning on things going in that direction). I have heard over and over from people to "wait until you get your life settled before you have to be responsible for someone else" or "you need to enjoy your life before you get tied down" or my personal favorites "what about your career?" or "you don't want to be dependent on a man for your whole life!"

As someone who has been in a longterm relationship for several years, I am tired of hearing this stuff and being shamed for wanting to be married young. Yes I understand that marriage is hard work and it is a team effort to make it work, but that is something I want. Yes, I want a successful career, but I want to have children and be able to spend time with them and be at home. Yes I don't want to be completely dependent on a man, but I do want to have someone that I know will take care of me.

Why does it have to be one way or the other? So many people think that the only way a woman can be successful in her career is to wait forever to get married and not have a family till their 30's and if a woman decides that she wants to get married in her early 20's that she cannot have a successful career or even care about her career. I personally think that there is no reason that a woman (or man) cannot have both; a successful career AND a

Some women don't want to get married at all or want to wait until they are in their thirties to get married, but I am the exact opposite. I have set my goals for my life before I get married; one of the first things that I told my boyfriend when we started talking about getting married was that I would not get married until we had both graduated and how our degree and really that was my biggest requirement because I knew that once I found the person that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with that I would want to do that and spend my life with him and as much of my life as I can.

I got lucky that I got to meet this amazing guy that I know is who I want to spend the rest of my life with at such an early age and that I will get to, Lord willing, spend the rest of my life with him. I want the internet to accept that. Don't pressure people one way or the other; to think that it is a horrible thing to get married before you're 35 or that being single in your 20's is an awful thing because these things are that are good about both things and people need to be able to figure this out for themselves without feeling pressured to do it one way or the other.

What are your thoughts about getting married? When did you get married?

Don't mind me, I'm just the intern

What I thought an internship was: doing the work without the pay because I am getting school credit that I paid for...

When I started my internship at WOOF Radio in Dothan, Alabama in May, I had no idea what to expect. WOOF is a small radio station that is family owned and operated and has been for over 50 years that plays soft rock on the FM station and there is a sports talk station on the AM side. I expected to go in, work and hopefully learn something that would help me get a job later. BUT what I got was an AMAZING internship that I never dreamed would be possible. This internship hasn't just taught me theory type things that I have heard about in school, I have gotten hands on experience and so much more. Honestly, I think I have learned more in my 10 weeks at WOOF that will help me in the long run than I think I have learned in college.

Now I did learn a lot in college but internships definitely teach you so much more of a real world learning. If your major or school does not require an internship, do yourself a favor and get one anyway. Try and get multiple if you can. It can't hurt you, you can only go up.

And now that I am graduating in 2 weeks here are the top 3 things that I learned from my internship.

Don't be afraid to try new things:
Just because your major is in one thing, if you are interning at a company that is in your field, just do whatever they ask you do. You will learn more and be more useful in the long run if you can do anything in the field. Don't limit yourself to what you think you want to do, because that's great and all that you know what you want to do, but you might be asked to do a different task and end up falling in love with it.

Ask questions:
You are there to learn and those who work there should know that and hopefully they will be willing to help you. I know that I have been blessed to have such an amazing internship with people who really care, but in most circumstances, you are going to get out of the internship what you put into it.
Make connections:
If anyone has seen the movie The Internship about the two men who loose their jobs and get internships at Google (if you haven't seen it, go watch it, it's hilarious) but in the movie, Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are the least likely people to succeed in the internship but because of the connections they make with the other interns and those around them, they end up doing a whole lot better than anyone expected from them.  But the whole point of this is to say, don't keep to yourself during your internship. Make friends with those you are with, both other interns and the employees. It will really pay off because especially the employees of the company have been doing whatever you're doing longer than you have and they know more people so they can be great resources for job hunting.

What kind of things did you learn from your internships? Where did you intern at? What advice would you give to those interning or about to start to job hunting??

Dear Future Freshman

22 days from now I will be a college graduate....hold on, let me let that sink in for a second. I HAVE LESS THAN A MONTH AND I HAVE TO ADULT FULL TIME!!! To me, that is only slightly terrifying. The whole "what are you doing after graduation" question has been floating around for like a year, but now it is getting so much more real. And don't let them fool you into thinking job hunting is fun and glamourous...it really isn't. I don't have to go back to Troy in the fall for band camp or classes, I have student loans that start repayment in January and the rest of my life to think about.

Okay, mini panic attack under control.

Now that I am slowly coming to terms with the fact that I will no longer be able to put on forms at the doctors office "student" or get the "student" discount at stores anymore, I have been doing some thinking, "What are things I want my brother to know when he starts college?" (which by the way, is in a year....that blows my mind more than the fact that I am graduating)

Advice to College Freshman from a Soon-to-be College Grad

The better prepared you are the better you will do: My college classes taught me a lot, like Who's on First, What's on Second and I don't Know is on Third...but I have to say, most of what I needed to know to succeed in my internship was taught from out of class experiences. I spent a lot of time in college doing extra circulars like our TV station and band and things like that have taught me more than my classes. Time spent outside of class is where you have more access to real-world learning. Don't just sit in front of your computer all day long and watch Netflix or play video games, go find a club to get involved in that is in your major. Do something productive with some of the free time you have. Not only is it a great resume booster, but it also helps you network with people who are going into the same field as you, and believe me, that goes a long way later.

Keep Track of Your Free Time: This is something that I have struggled with during my college days and I am just now getting the hang of it while I am interning. Enjoy your free time, but set limits on it. I can't tell you the number of times that I have sat down on the couch and told myself "I'll only watch an episode of 'Say Yes to the Dress' and then I'll go do x, y, and z." and guess what, three hours later, I realize that x, y, and z still haven't been done. Something I have found that makes this easier is just do the work before you sit down. That way you can enjoy your free time. Make a to-do list, have a planner, anything to help you see what needs to be done and helps you keep track of it is so helpful! Just be sure you actually use your planner, just having one isn't going to do you any good...

Be Sure to have "Me" Time: There are days that you sometimes just have to say "Today is for me" and not let anyone ruin it for you. Go read a book or shop a little bit, whatever it is that makes you feel better, because believe me, college will get stressful and hectic and you have to know how to handle it. Even if it is 10 minutes a day to just sit and read you Bible or a good book, do it. I promise it will do you a world of good.

Manage your Stress in a HEALTHY Way: This is sooooo important. I have seen people who don't know how to handle their stress in ways that are healthy and end up physically hurting their bodies. Too much food, lack of food, lack of sleep, alcohol; all of these things are ways to hurt yourself. Go to the gym, eat something healthy, take a nap, all things to help keep your stress levels down, and are pretty good for your body.

Have fun: When they say college is the best years of your life, they aren't joking. You have the freedom of being an adult (which means making some adult decisions) but you are still a kid in that you can go out at 2 in the morning and get McDonalds if you want and no one will really judge you (and if they do judge you, get rid of them, you don't need that kind of negative influence in your life haha). Just don't forget, college is only for a few years, so make the most out of the time you have there and make crazy memories that will give you stories to talk about for years to come.

So for all of you soon to be freshman, or anyone in college or really anyone in life, take some advice from me and learn from my mistakes.

What are some of your best tips to make it through college?

I'm A Looser

This post has two points...

1. I am a looser because I have not done great at this blogging thing. But I am in a position now to get better with it. My life is going through a lot of changes right now and I think one of the best ways to get all of my thoughts organized in my head is to write about them. Even if other people aren't reading it, it is a way for me to work through what I am doing with my life and give me something fun to write about. Graduation is less than a month away (24 days to be exact) and that is a crazy concept. But more on that later.

I hope you will stick with me as I get through my last month as a college student and try to figure out the next stage of my life.

2. I am a looser because my friends and I have decided to do a biggest looser challenge. This is going to be fun because it is a friendly competition between a bunch of friends, and even if I don't win the actual challenge, getting a little healthier is a good thing.

I have bought a bunch of fruit and veggies to try and make some healthy meals. But again, more on that later.

Here's hoping that I am more dedicated now, because I feel like I need to be blogging because it makes gives me something to be productive about and a way to figure out where I'm going in next.

Until later,

New Name, New Chapter

Well hello there! So if you noticed, A Taste of the College Life is now......

I felt this change was necessary because well, I am leaving college in a couple months and I feel that this has changed from a food based blog to just a life style blog.

And it has been a couple months since I have posted so here is a big 3 update!

1. I tried to give blood, that didn't work...my iron was too low. But I am going to try again soon because I do want to be able to give blood and hopefully my iron levels will be higher. It was fun though because I got to hang out with my roommate and best friend.

2. I GOT AN INTERNSHIP! That means I get to actually graduate in July! I will be interning at WOOF FM in Dothan and I can't wait. I am so excited to learn about this field of journalism and see where this will take me.

3. I started my own business! I am now a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. I get to run my own business and make money while still working on my education. I have been working it for about a month and I think I'm doing pretty well at it. If you ever need anything let me know. You can visit my Mary Kay website HERE. Having this job is great because I work it around my schedule and get to make other women feel wonderful (and men, there is an entire line of Mary Kay Men's products)

What have you been up to? I'm glad to be back and I am hopeful to be able to incorporate some of my make up and Mary Kay into the blog!

Talk to you soon

March Goals, February Recap, And Product Review

**This post contains a review of a product that I was compensated for, but the opinions are all mine.**

Wow, it is already March?? Where did February go? I really don't think that this is possible. On top of the strange fact that time seems to be going super fast, Alabama is all sorts of confused in the weather department. Within the next 72 hours we will go from a high of 78 tomorrow and a high of 39 on Thursday. Just thought it was a fun fact.

Anywho, here are my recaps of the goals I made in February.

Health and Fitness

Keep drinking water: I haven't done as well with this as I would have liked, but I can also tell it. Which I guess is good because that means I know when I need to drink more?
Walk 10,000 steps per day: I don't think my phone ever broke 10,000 steps but I know there were days that I did hit it. Though having this as a constant thought in the back of my head, I did realize how much I just sit during the day, especially when I don't have classes till the afternoon.

School

Apply for more internship: This one I did really well. I applied to about 5 more internships and have heard back from a couple. But that news will come later. So stay tuned!

Social

Have an awesome V-Day date: Well we didn't really do much for Valentines day, he had fraternity stuff on Friday night and basketball games on Saturday. But we did have a lot of fun. I made him a date in a box and made dinner and he bought me 101 Dalmatians on DVD because it is one of my favorite movies ever. While it wasn't anything extravagant, it was a lot of fun and relaxing.

Blog

Get more page views: I have hit 10,000 page views total during this past month, but hopefully it will only continue to grow.

Health and Fitness
  • Go to the Gym: One of the things I want to do before I graduate is get start going to the gym on a regular basis, and I have started going a little bit but I want to do better about it.
Social
  • Have fun during Spring Break: So I don't have anything big planned but it is my last Spring Break ever so I am going to make this a lot of fun.
Blog
  • Work on Re-branding: This weekend I announced on Facebook that big things were coming for the blog, and that basically means that I am working on redoing the blog. Like us on Facebook so that you can keep up to date on everything.

Something I got to do this month was try out a new eyelash curler. One of my favorite things about makeup is eye makeup. I love playing with mascara, eyeshadow, eye liner, any thing. So when I was given the opportunity to review this Eye Lash Curler I was really excited. It comes in super cute packaging and works fantastic.

It is $15 on Amazon but I think it is worth it because it works really well. I have used cheaper eyelash curlers before but this one I could really see the difference.
My makeup yesterday. Sorry for the terrible picture.

What are your goals for the month of March?

Work Out Play Lists

This week I have been working toward marking something off my Graduation Bucket List by working out. While I have never been one to love running or exercise in general, I have really enjoyed going to the gym the last few days because it really makes me feel better.

One thing that I have found that makes working out a little easier is to have a good playlist to listen to while I do run on the elliptical or use the machines. Up-beat and energetic music is the best because I get into a groove with the music and work at the tempo of the music (its a band geek problem). I don't usually make an actual playlist because I don't ever know exactly what I want to listen to, but I love listening to Pandora.

Here are the Pandora stations that I listen to the most:

  • Uptown Funk- Based on the hit, it is full of uptempo music and very energetic.
  • Disney Songs- Okay, well I am a huge Disney nerd, but I love listening to this station because I just want to sing along and forget that I am working out.
  • All Star- Perfect for any #TBT or to just bring out the 90's/early 2000's.
  • Florida Georgia Line- A good mix of different country music
  • Here Comes the Sun- If you want to get back to our roots, I mean who doesn't like "Brown Eyed Girl" or "Piano Man"?
What are some of your favorite songs to listen to while you work out? Do you have certain songs that you listen to when you run?

Why My Friday the 13th Didn't Suck!

Well yesterday was Friday the 13th, which most people say is a terrible day, but in all honesty, I had a pretty amazing day. Went up to Montgomery and filmed some for a class and then got to go shopping! Having 2 littles and __ number of adopted littles, (I won't tell how many I have because they don't know) I get to do a lot of shopping and crafting. It is busy but it is a lot of fun. I will post pictures of my crafts when I can.

Most importantly, I got my computer back!!! While this week without it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I definitely learned that I am very dependent on it. Thankfully I had other stuff I could use (my phone and my boyfriends computer) but school work is difficult to do on a phone and he had homework too. But that doesn't matter any more because I have it back!!!!!!

Also I was featured on Misadventures With Andi with her weekly food blogger interview! Super exciting to see where my blog is going.

And don't worry, next week there will be a lot more posts. Now that my computer is back, it is a lot easier.

Happy Valentines day everyone! :)

January Recap and February Goals

My my my, how time has flown. It is already February? What is this craziness. Before I know it, it will be July and I will be graduating! But with the beginning of the month, it is time to set new goals for the month of February and give a recap of how my January goals went.

January Recap:

Health and Fitness: My goals for this were to drink more water and less soda and I have to say I did pretty well on this. I drank on average 32 oz of water during the month so hopefully throughout the rest of the year I will keep it up. I really do feel better drinking more water and at least a little less soda.

School: Don't get behind. Well so far I haven't. I probably have some reading I need to be doing but other than that, I am doing pretty good.

Social: I aimed to get out and do stuff with my friends and we actually did really good with that. One of my roommates turned 21 this year and we went out to celebrate. And my boyfriend and I went out this past weekend and had a great date day. So I would say that was a successful goal.

Blog: Well obviously I didn't get posted two times a week but I did get my blog redesigned so it has to count for something right?

Health and Fitness
  • Keep drinking water: Maybe this is a cheating goal, but this is something that is beneficial.
  • Walk 10,000 steps per day: My phone sorta keeps track of this for me. It keeps track but it might not always been that accurate but it is a good measuring tool. And 10,000 steps is a lot, it usually equals out about 5 miles so that is a good start.
School
  •  Apply for more internship: So with graduation approaching, one of the things I have to do is get an internship. I have turned in one application so far and am working on turning in at least 3 more in the next week or two.
Social
  • Have an awesome V-Day date: We might not be able to do anything on the actual day of Valentines day, but I want to be able to celebrate it pretty awesomely. And don't worry, I will post about all about it.
Blog
  • Get more page views: I am going to try and be more present on social media so that I can continue to grow my blog.
I am also linking up today with Karissa at A Fresh Start for Monday Motivation.
A Fresh Start

What are some of your goals for the month of February?

Valentines Day Ideas for the Broke

The season of love is upon us. Wal-Mart has been ready for it since the week after Christmas and ads have been on TV since New Years. But what do you do when you want to show some love for your honey but are on the ramen noodle budget? You have to get creative.

This year will be the fourth Valentines day that I have spent with my boyfriend. While I love him more than anything and love our dinner dates and movie dates, I like to do things other than sit and watch a movie and make dinner. The problem is that I have great ideas but not such a great budget. Thank you college. But over the last few years, I have started getting more creative with things to do without spending a lot of money, because hey, its the thought that counts right?

So in honor of the season, I have compiled some of my favorite non-dinner-and-a-moive dates that we have done and some things that I want to do in the future.

Go to the Park for a Picnic- This is one of my favorite things that we have done because it can be as spontaneous as you want. There have been times that we have made plans to go out and then other times that we just go get lunch and go sit outside. Getting out of the house when the weather is nice makes for a great day.

Look at the stars- Similar to the picnic in the park, grab a blanket or two, a few pillows and a drink and drive out of town a little bit to be away from the lights and just lay and watch the stars. It is very peaceful to just lay there, talk or just think. Hey, I mean even Simba did it in the Lion King.

Find a Festival- While the town we live in is fairly small (really the only thing that we have is the University and Wal-Mart) we have lots of festivals near us. Small, southern towns love to have festivals apparently. Troy has one in April but different areas have different festivals throughout the year. A lot of them are free to get into and who doesn't love festival food?

Fill in the Blank Date- Okay, so this is basically a dinner and a movie date, but it has a different take on it. If you and your honey are like me and mine, then a very common discussion is "what do you want to do?" "I don't care, what do you want to do?" and on and on. Well this takes the guess work out of it. Just write it out and have your significant other fill in the blanks.

Paint Together- Last year, for our anniversary, I gave my boyfriend a year of dates and January's was to paint a canvas together for each other. This also makes a great group date because it can be adjusted for however many people you have. I got our supplies from Social Artworking because they have everything and it was easy to follow. It is a DIY Paint Party! Then you have something special to hang in your room from your lover. Or if you live together, hang them next to each other and show off your talent.

Dinner and a Movie- If you do just really want to eat and watch a movie then try this, go to the library and to get a couple movies. Most public libraries are free to get a card if you live in the county or district. Now each of you go pick out a movie that you want the other to watch. Rule is you can't complain about what the other picks and you have to watch both. Once you get the movies, go back home and cook dinner together. You can cook anything you want, but do it together. Then eat and watch your movies.

These are just a few of my favorite date ideas. What are some different date ideas you have?

Happy Valentines Day!

Baby its cold outside

This weeks 52 Weeks of Photos is to show something cold. This last week, we had a lot of cold in Troy, but that meant I got some cool pictures with my new camera.

We had ice on the window one morning and I took the opportunity to get some cool pictures. And yes, this ice was on the inside of my window. It was just that cold outside.

Have you had any crazy weather lately?

Resolution | Week 1

Well it is officially a full week into the first week of the new year. If you read my post last week, you saw that I don't do well with year long resolutions, but I did make some goals for January. And one of the goals is to drink more water this month.

I am also trying to be better about blogging with a schedule and one thing I am doing is a 52 week photo challenge. This might have something to do with the fact that my parents got me a fabulous new camera for Christmas so now I can take better pictures! So be prepared for it. Pictures every Wednesday!

Week 1- Resolution

Like I said already, my goal is to drink more water this month, and it makes it a little easier if I have a cute thing to drink out of. Over the summer I painted a cup for myself to drink out of. So my pictures today are of my cup!

This was my summer cup, I need to work on a new one that is more universal, but I really enjoy this one. During the past week, I had Symphony Band Camp and almost 9 hours worth of rehearsal a day and that means a lot of water. My cup holds about 32 oz. of water and I drank at least 2 or 3 of these a day for the past week. I would have to say, I am doing pretty well at this whole drinking a lot of water thing. Now to see if I can keep it up for the next few weeks.

What are some of your goals for 2015 or January?

And the Winner Is....

What a great way to start the new year, by getting an award! A Taste of the College Life started out as a class project for school and has grown into something that I love. I have developed such a love for blogging, and getting nominated for this is fantastic. It is the first award that A Taste of the College Life has won and I am so excited to see where 2015 will take me!

The Liebster Award is an award given from bloggers to bloggers and I was nominated by Meg at At Home with Meg. Thanks Meg!! My little blog is still little, but it is growing, and right now that is all I can ask for.

So here goes nothing!

Questions from At Home with Meg:

1. What do you love most about blogging?
I think the thing I love most is being able to write and it not be too serious. I have written a couple serious posts, but even posts on serious topics are fun to write because I'm not getting graded. There is just something about being able to blog and write about whatever is on my mind that I enjoy.
2. Who is your favorite blogger that you get inspiration or motivation from?
I think one of my favorite bloggers is Rachael from A Rachael Way.  She was one of the first blogs that I followed regularly and I enjoy reading what she posts. Right now she is teaching in China, so go check her out.

3. What is your favorite blog post you’ve written?
This is tough. I have two, I know, that's cheating, but it is two favorites because they are very different. One was the first post I wrote that got a lot of notice Dear Trojan Football. It has over 8,000 page views and is still viewed almost daily, 3 months after it was written. This post made me feel like I am actually doing something right.

My other favorite post is something that is very near to my heart, Living with a Peanut Allergy. So many people don't understand what it really means to be allergic to something, especially as common as peanuts, but I want to make a point to let people know these things.

4. If you were on Survivor – what type of player would you be (a leader, a team player, a strategist, manipulator, etc)?
I would be a leader more than likely, it comes very naturally to me to lead. But I don't know if I would make it on Survivor, I am much more of a house and air conditioning kind of girl.

5. If you found yourself on a deserted island, what five things would you want with you?
Is there a palm tree? Because I would definitely want a palm tree. I also want a boat, Jack Sparrow (because as I was once told, he can get out of everything), food, and good books.

6. What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done?
Set my oven on fire. It was completely unintentional, there was grease in the bottom of the oven and all of a sudden it burst in flames. It was so scary because I have never had anything like that happen before.

7. What is your favorite quote and why?
"It will all be okay in the end, if it's not okay, it's not the end." It is just a constant reminder that everything will be okay and everything happens for a reason.

8. What was the last movie you saw and what are your top five movie picks?
The last movie I saw was one I watched with Alex over Christmas break and we watched The Internship. It was really funny, slightly inappropriate in certain points, but it was funny.

Top 5 movie picks (In no order)- Tangled, Legally Blonde, The Fault in Our Stars, The Notebook, The Princess and the Frog

9. Do you prefer to eat cookies, cake, cupcakes, or candy?
Umm...all of the above?

10. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
I would probably pay off a lot of my student loans because I don't really want that hanging over my head for a long time. Then I would go buy new clothes, because I like clothes!

11. What’s the first concert you ever went to?
First, and only, concert I went to was a Third Day concert in Atlanta that my mom won tickets to on the radio.

11 Facts about Me

2. I read the book P.S. I Love You on a band trip and cried the entire time.
3. My dream job is to have a talk show.
4. But I really would be perfectly content being a blogger and stay at home wife/mom.
5. I had never heard of Troy until my junior year of high school and this is the only school I applied to for college.
6. I cried during the last football game when we sang the Alma Mater and I sang with my sisters.
